100 Days of My Window

This project was tasked for the course Design Principles and Practices course at Carnegie Mellon University School of Design. For 100 days, we need to execute one design operation daily. The chosen practice should be something repeatable every day, and must be documented in a specific form.

Timeline

Sep. 2022 - Dec. 2022

Tool Used

Adobe Photoshop

Ideation

As an international student who first came to the Stated, everything seems so refreshing to me. I found myself really like taking photos from my window, which inspires me to illustrate what I see and feel every day. In the future, I can look back on these illustrations and recall the feeling and unique experiences I had.

Process

Choose the color that represents the day

Draw the view outside my window and document the time when I got home everyday

Combine the elements of the day into my drawing

Digital Illustration

Physical Design

I also printed all the pieces and built a small window box to put them in. After you open the blinds, you can see each day's illustrations folded in the box.

Takeaways

I really enjoyed the design process and I am satisfied with how this project turned out. This is a great way for me to document my adventures here as an international student. I began to appreciate more everything I experience every day, from weather changes to personal emotions, from a new word I learned to each interaction with different people. Moreover, since I need to draw it every day, I have learned to manage my time across different classes and assignments to ensure I can devote myself to this project on a daily basis. Last but not least, I learned to combine different skills I learned in the Design Principals and Practices course to make this project complete. For instance, I finished the illustration with the sketch method taught by Professor Mark Baskinger, built the window frame with the box-building skill demonstrated by Professor Josiah Stadelmeier, and iterated the project with the feedback from Professor Brett Yasko.
